Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie

The 23,500 acre former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant is now a national tallgrass prairie and the largest piece of protected open space in northern Illinois. The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie was established through the Illinois Land Conservation Act of 1995.

MPCS coordinates an annual census of the prairie chicken population, provides equipment to land managers for prescribed burning of grassland habitats, supports prairie chicken research including a recent winter ecology study, provides educational materials to land-owners and learning centers, and produces audio-visual programs which tell the story of prairie chickens in Minnesota.

Missouri Botanical Garden

Founded in 1859, the Missouri Botanical Garden is the nation's oldest botanical garden in continuous operation and a National Historic Landmark. The Garden is a center for botanical research and science education. The Garden offers 79 acres of horticultural display, including a 14-acre Japanese strolling garden, Henry Shaw's original 1850 estate home, and one of the world's largest collections of rare and endangered orchids.

Morton Arboretum

The Morton Arboretum is an internationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to the planting and conservation of trees. Its 1,700 acres hold collections of more than 4,000 kinds of trees, shrubs, and other plants from around the world. The grounds offer 16 miles of hiking trails, 9 miles of roads, and 900 acres of natural areas including the prototypical, restored 100-acre Schulenberg Prairie.

The Association works to inform, unite, and support persons engaged in identifying, protecting, managing, and studying natural areas and biological diversity across landscapes and ecosystems. Its membersw include land and resource managers, biologists, ecologists, researchers, land trusts, educators, students, and others interested in environmental conservation and management of natural areas.

North Branch Restoration Project

The North Branch Restoration Project is a group of dedicated citizens that work to help protect and restore native Illinois ecosystems. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, pioneering ecologists such as Floyd Swink, Bob Betz, and Ray Schulenberg inspired a growing interest in the ecology of the native prairies of Northeastern Illinois. In 1977, this group began to rescue remnant native prairies along the North Branch of the Chicago River.
