Henry Chandler Cowles

On this day in 1869 the Illinois ecologist Henry Chandler Cowles was born.
He is remembered as the inventor of 'dynamic ecology,' as a founding member of the Ecological Society of America, and as author of 'Ecological Relations of the Vegetation on the Sand Dunes of Lake Michigan' (1899).
He and his many famous students at the University of Chicago formed the scientific basis for the mid-twentieth century prairie movement in the United States.
