Henry Allan Gleason

Saturday, January 2, 2010 - 12:00

On this day in 1882, the Illinois botanist and ecologist Henry Allan Gleason was born.

The leading light of prairie ecology in Illinois for many years, he was the author of numerous texts, including 'The vegetation of the inland sand deposits of Illinois' (1910) and, most famously, the "Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada."

The Henry Gleason Nature Preserve has been dedicated to his memory.
