On this day in 1916 the Illinois conservationist George Fell was born.

A pioneer in the Illinois prairie movement, he was instrumental to the founding of many important organizations, including the Ecological Society of America, The Nature Conservancy, the Natural Land Institute, the Prairie Chicken Foundation of Illinois, the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission, the Illinois Endangered Species Board, and the Natural Areas Association.

The George Fell Nature Preserve has been dedicated to his memory.
