You can't throw fluffy seed very far, so you need a big 'bucket' to cover large areas in a reasonable time. This LandPride (model FS1000a) requires a 20 horsepower tractor and will hold 11 cubic feet. The newest models are fiberglass, not metal, and will last forever.

Avoid the garden center type devices. They are of little use. No matter the size, the key feature is a substantial stir-rod. Without this, the spreader will quickly clog.
