Monday, January 11, 2010 - 12:00

On this day in 1887, the renowned Wisconsin ecologist and ethicist Aldo Leopold was born.

He is remembered as the modern founder of the field of wildlife management and the basic ethical ideal of a 'land ethic.  In 'A Sand County Almanac' (1949) he wrote, "A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise."

He died in 1948 while working on a prescribed burn.
